What does it mean when you see a listing under the heading ‘Known health issues’?

It is our intention to provide a ‘full picture’ service in relation to pedigree dogs. Whilst we will ONLY EVER accept the very highest quality dog breeders on to our website and we will NEVER accept the blanket advertising of puppies by breeders who do not comply with our charter for ethical dog breeding, we also believe strongly in the need to be transparent about the health issues affecting pedigree dogs.

Under each breed’s profile page we will categorise the latest known health issues affecting each breed.

Why you may this listed under a breeder’s listing?

In February 2009 the UK Dog Breeder Directory was re-developed and extensive improvements made to the registration system meant that breeders – all of whom have agreed to our charter for ethical breeding – who were listed before the directory was upgraded had not been subject to our new and improved listings policies.

At the UK Dog Breeder Directory we believe in health testing and ethical dog breeding practice over and above ANY other aspect related to pedigree dogs. To this end we have implemented a policy where we are requesting all breeders registered on the site provide us with written evidence of their health testing policies and documentation relating to vet records and appropriate breed health notes.

This is an extensive process and will be completed in 2009. So if you see the abbrieviation NYV it means the health screening policy of that particular breeder is not yet verified by UK Dog Breeder Directory but it does NOT mean that the particular breeder doesn’t health test. It is most likely that they do, we have just not verified this information in line with our updated processes.
